Californians are increasingly recognizing the benefits of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). Between 2016-2023, the number of ADUs permitted annually in the state grew from 1,336 to 26,924, a 20-fold increase. In 2023, ADUs comprised more than 21 percent of all homes permitted statewide.
In light of the significance of ADUs, Housing and Community Development (HCD) has updated their ADU Handbook. The handbook provides a summary of recent changes to State ADU law, frequently asked questions, funding resources, size requirements and restrictions, rental terms, and more.
