Artist in Residence – Request for Proposal 2025

The Town of Fairfax invites proposals to fill three Artist-in-Residence positions for a two-year term, from April 2, 2025, to April 1, 2027.

The positions are open to artists of all disciplines (e.g., graphic, multimedia, sculpture, culinary arts). Preference will be given to artists who can collaborate effectively and demonstrate proficiency in computer skills. The purpose of this role is to bring creative experiences and artistic engagement to the residents of Fairfax.

About the position

For over two decades, the Artist-in-Residence program has enriched the Fairfax community through the creativity and dedication of its participants. Artists have provided invaluable contributions, including:

  • Open studios, pop-up concerts, and art exhibits.
  • After-school classes for youth and community programs for teens.
  • Art classes and workshops for adults and the Ross Valley Seniors Club.
  • Coordinating art projects in town, such as the Art Walk.
  • Leading art activities at events like the Fairfax Festival and the Townwide Picnic.

Artists are encouraged to work in mixed media and must maintain a personal website to share updates about classes and events.

Artists have considerable flexibility to shape the role, provided they:

  • Collaborate with an appointed team and the Recreation Department.
  • Provide art programming and support at the Fairfax Festival and the Town Picnic.
  • Attend Parks and Recreation Commission (PARC) meetings to report on activities.

Residency in Ross Valley is required, with preference given to Fairfax residents.

Application & Selection Process

Submit a completed online application by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 28, 2025 via the Town’s website. No work samples are required at the time of submission but will be requested during the interview process.

Review Process

  • Submissions will be evaluated by Recreation and Community Services staff and Parks and Recreation Commission volunteers.
  • Recommended candidates will be presented to the Town Council for approval.
  • Proposers will be notified via email if selected for a panel interview, tentatively scheduled for the week of March 10, 2025.
