About the Town of Fairfax

Fairfax is a residential community of 7,000 population located within a 30 minute drive from San Francisco, the beach, and the mountains, in western Marin County. The Department

The Department consists of the Chief of Police, one Lieutenant, two Sergeants, one Detective, six Patrol Officers, four Dispatchers and one Police Service Technician. Supplementing this full time staff are, three part time Dispatchers and two Police Cadet. The officers are generalists who typically handle cases from first response, through investigation, and onto final disposition. In addition, Officers frequently assist the Chief of Police with administrative duties and consult closely with him in formulating departmental policies, procedures and tactics. The Dispatchers handle police radio communication with field officers, answer 911 and business phone lines and assist the public at the Police Lobby front counter which is open 24/7. The department also handles police dispatching and call taking for the Ross Police Department and the Marin Community College Police Department.

Selection Process 

Examination process will first consist of a review of application material. The most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in written and oral examinations. Upon completion of the oral examination, an eligible list will be established which will be used for the appointment to the position.

Prior to an employment offer being made, a thorough background check will be done. At the time employment is offered, applicants are required to successfully pass a medical and psychological examination and must be able to furnish proof of legal right to work within the United States. Candidates must not have been convicted by any state or by the federal government of a crime, the punishment for which could have been imprisonment in a federal penitentiary or a state prison.
