How do I obtain a building permit?

Building permits are required to build, enlarge, alter, remove, demolish, or repair a structure. This includes everything from houses and garages to commercial construction, tenant improvements to signs. Some work does not require.  Prior to getting a building permit, you should first check with the Planning Division to make sure what you want to do is allowed.

To apply for a building permit for any structural changes, or to add square footage to an existing structure, you need to:

  • Complete an application form (submit to the Town)
  • Provide construction drawings
  • Pay building permit fees

After the work has been completed you’ll need to schedule an inspection by calling (415) 453-2263. Field inspection hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Answer to question: You may or may not need a building permit depending on the type of work. Please contact the Building Division at (415) 453-1584 or Mark Lockaby, Building Official, at mlockaby@townoffairfax.org.
