Upcoming Ross Valley Sanitary District (RVSD) Sewer Project in Fairfax

Posted on March 14, 2025

Residents and businesses in Fairfax, take note! The Ross Valley Sanitary District (RVSD) is moving forward with the Fairfax Capacity and Creek Crossings Project, which aims to improve the town’s sewer infrastructure while minimizing disruptions to residents and businesses.

The Chamber of Commerce recently met with RVSD to discuss this project to learn more about impacts to local businesses. The meeting was recorded and can be viewed online.

Project Overview

What’s Happening?

RVSD will install a relief sewer under Fairfax Creek and along Broadway to help manage inflow and infiltration into the system. This new pipe will not connect to existing sewer laterals but will improve overall system capacity.

Why?

The town’s sewer pipes are over 70 years old, and replacing them will help prevent leaks, reduce wastewater treatment costs, and improve long-term reliability.

Stormwater vs. Sewer System?

This project focuses on reducing stormwater intrusion into the sewer system, which helps prevent overflows and unnecessary strain on wastewater treatment facilities.

Timeline & Next Steps

  1. The project is currently at 50% design completion, with final plans expected by April.
  2. Construction is anticipated to begin in September 2024 and may continue through July 2026.
  3. No full road closures are expected, but efforts will be made to minimize disruption.
  4. RVSD is coordinating with the Town of Fairfax and local businesses to ensure smooth implementation, particularly around major events like the Fairfax Festival (June 7-8) and holiday shopping periods in November and December.

What to Expect

  • Business & Resident Notifications: Property owners will receive physical letters from RVSD and the contractors before work begins.
  • Construction Updates: Regular project progress updates will be shared, especially once a contractor’s schedule is finalized.
  • Follow-up Meeting in Early September: A public meeting will be held to discuss construction details and address any concerns.
