Updates to General Plan, Safety Element and Land Use Element

Posted on March 28, 2025

The Fairfax 2010 to 2030 General Plan is a broad, long-term policy document that guides future development and conservation within the Town, serving as a blueprint for growth and land use decisions. The Town is in the process of making targeted updates to the General Plan in response to State Law.  Those interested are invited to come to the Planning Commission on April 17, 2025 to learn more about these updates and provide public comment. Here is a summary:

  • Safety Element. Last updated in 2012, updates are now required to ensure that the Town is fully prepared for a disaster and to also ensure that the Town is eligible for recovery funds in the case of a disaster declaration. The Town’s Local Hazard Mitigation Plan was adopted on June 5, 2024 and this triggers updates to the Safety Element. New mapping information is newly available related to fire hazards and this should also be incorporated into the Safety Element. If the Safety Element is not updated in a timely manner, then the Town would be ineligible for some disaster funding.
  • Land Use Element. The Land Use Element, also last updated in 2012, is now out-of-date due to the adoption of the Housing Element in late 2023. An update is now required to eliminate inconsistencies between the two elements. The proposed updates are mostly technical in nature and do not significantly change policies.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend the April 17 Planning Commission meeting to learn more and provide public testimony. The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. and will be held in the Women’s Club at 46 Park Road.
